Welcome to the CMEA-CCS website. Happy New School Year!  I wish you well and enough patience, positivity, and purchase orders to sustain you through the 2009-2010 school year. As your elected representative, I thank you for your trust and look forward to serving as an advocate for the students of the CMEA-Central Coast Section and as a voice for our members.</p><p class='inden'>We all know members who are teaching music this year in a new, different or even diminished capacity. Many school music programs are struggling to maintain a basic program and teachers’ schedules are being stretched. However, on the Central Coast, music is clearly still alive in the hearts of our members, our students, and the communities we serve. This seems to be true whether a music program has been excised or enhanced. Many programs have been cut lean, but that silver lining of music is still twinkling there; composers groups are realizing their own music, community programs are growing, and many districts still have some music or even a great program.</p><p class='inden'>Politics aside, humanity values art and therefore arts education.  The amount of value in a curricular program is often measured by the amount of funding. What if we measured value with different criteria? The pendulum of opinion or funding inevitably swings from one side to the other and in its path remains the essence of what is valued. The scramble to produce and maintain a quality music program with fading funding is a recurring theme. Like the economy, do we have to ride out the education side of this recession? Maybe, but we do so with passionate patience. Almost every member at our recent spring meeting ultimately found a solution or compromised their schedule to keep a job and to keep music alive. When I talked with other section presidents at the recent State board meeting, it seems our spirits are strong. Our members remain positive and creative without candy-coating the situation. We support each other as educators and as friends.</p><p class='inden'>Teachers feel supported in many ways. At the spring general meeting, we talked about a private teacher cooperative to pool resources; to keep doing what we do best and what the community values. Youth Music Monterey and the Monterey Jazz Festival are aligned with CMEA-CCS goals, in that they require auditioning students to remain a member of their school music program. Be assured that someone in our section is experiencing a situation similar to yours. I encourage you to reach out to each other and know that you are supported.</p><p class='inden'>In the meantime, I have some recession proof ideas for the classroom. Early on in this school I needed some fresh team building activities and found a great link. http://wilderdom.com/games/FreeTeamBuildingActivities.html  In just a few minutes I had read through several simple activities and found an activity that quite successful. The Monterey Symphony education director, Diane Cadei, is a wonderful resource for free 4th-8th grade presentations and symphony tickets.  She will be sending a woodwind, brass, string ensemble for a demonstration with question and answer, to 18 schools in San Benito and Monterey counties. Free youth concerts are at the end of May for your whole class or program to attend.  For the Saturday Salinas concerts, five-dollar tickets are available for teachers, parents, and students even if the teacher cannot attend.   For more information, email Diane Cadei: <a href='mailto::education@montereysymphony.org'>education@montereysymphony.org.</a> Ask about a hands-on workshop, instrumental and opera clinicians, or other ideas you may have.  Please pass this information on to your elementary teachers.
